The agency includes 780 employees approximately and grows close to 1,000 employees at the peak of seasonal work.

We have a great career opportunity available as a Food Safety Compliance Specialist 2 with Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA), Food Safety Program. This position performs journey-level work including inspections, investigations and sample collection to protect public health from unsafe adulterated food by gaining compliance with state laws and federal regulations. Travel is required within your assigned area to conduct in-depth food inspections in facilities that process or hold food products including: food processors and food storage warehouses; produce farms; dairy farms; dairy plants; custom meat facilities, slaughter plants and trucks; egg handling facilities; poultry processors and other food handlers. This positioncovering the Tri-Cities in Washington State (Kennewick, Pasco, Richland) and thesurrounding areas.

Duties
  • Evaluates firm's control of public heath risks by performing independent inspections of conditions in facilities that hold, pack, transfer or produce food.
  • Bases inspections on the appropriate state and/or federal regulation and program policy.
  • Conducts federally mandated Grade 'A' Dairy testing of pasteurization equipment and evaluations of bulk milk haulers and samplers by written and practical examination.
  • Discerns between critical and minor violations and provides technical assistance to industry whenever possible.
  • Collects dairy product and water samples at mandated intervals to comply with federal regulation. Routinely samples food items for scheduled surveillance testing.
  • Conducts follow-up investigations in response to laboratory results.
  • Investigates and samples when inspection observations indicate a potential for public health risk. Sampling activities may include focused aseptic environmental and product sampling to determine the extent or source of a particular issue of public health concern.
  • Provides clear and concise oral and written reports of inspection and investigation findings.
  • Prepares reports that serve as the foundation for initiation of enforcement actions including on-the-spot product diversions (voluntary option to avoid embargo), embargo or stop sale actions. Documentation can include items such as photographs, product labels or processing records.
  • Assists the program in development and review of compliance cases as needed.
  • Provides technical assistance and education to industry and the public regarding food safety regulation, compliance and enforcement.
  • Provides applicants with technical assistance to achieve licensing status including the review of construction and remodel plans for compliance.
  • Participates in developing technical brochures and fact sheets to provide assistance and education to stakeholders, peers and other regulatory officials.
  • Coordinates and works with other state, local and federal agencies in actions, inspections, investigations and training dealing with issues of food safety.
  • Qualifications



    Required:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher with a major course of study in public health, environmental health, food science, agriculture, chemistry, biology/microbiology, horticulture or business related fields.
  • And
  • One year of experience in business, agriculture, food production or science related field.
  • Working knowledge and routine use of Microsoft (MS) Office products.
  • Must have a high level of skill in verbal and written communication.
  • Required to maintain a valid Washington State driver's license.
  • Ability to qualify for and obtain FDA Commissioning as required.

  • Incumbent must have in home internet connection and sufficient workspace as this is a position that requires 100% of the work be done at your home station .
