Requisition Id 492 PurposeThe Nuclear Data and Criticality Safety (NDCS) Group within the Reactor and Nuclear Systems Division (RNSD), Nuclear Science and Engineering Directorate, Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), seeks entry-level/early career applicants for an technical staff position, with emphasis in the area of Nuclear Criticality Safety. The NDCS group conducts R&D involving analyses and nuclear methods/software development to provide problem-solving tools, technical solutions, and policy advice to customers within the Department of Energy, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and other government and private organizations. Major Duties/Responsibilities The successful candidate will be expected to effectively and efficiently utilize state-of-the-art computational tools to perform detailed analyses of challenging criticality safety problems Specific work areas include sensitivity/uncertainty studies, critical experiment design and experiment evaluation, Monte Carlo criticality analyses, and criticality validation techniques and methods developmentThe selected candidate will be responsible for interacting with division staff, both within and outside the NDCS group who are working on projects in a team environmentDemonstrate results-oriented behavior, be able to work independently and in a team environment, thoroughly document work performed, and communicate work performed to peers and project sponsors Qualifications RequiredMust have an MS or BS degree in nuclear engineeringMust have demonstrated accomplishments in the criticality safety applications areaA firm understanding of the physics and methods of criticality safety backed by demonstrated recent and relevant experience with current criticality safety analysis codes, such as SCALE/KENO and MCNP, is a fundamental requirement of this position The candidate must have demonstrated problem-solving skills, a willingness to apply those skills to a variety of problems, and the ability to determine and understand the broader context of his or her research It is highly desirable for the candidate to have experience with the SCALE code system and/or its components, along with the other industry standard radiation transport codes In particular, knowledge of and experience with the SCALE criticality safety and sensitivity/uncertainty analysis tools (TSUNAMI), sensitivity/uncertainty methods, and associated data is highly desirable Experience with criticality safety analyses in a NRC and/or DOE criticality safety regulatory environment is also highly desirable Excellent communication skills including verbal, presentation, and writing skills are required to enable effective interaction with technical peers, program managers, and sponsorsThis position requires the ability to obtain and maintain a clearance from the Department of Energy. As such, this position is a Workplace Substance Abuse (WSAP) testing designated position. WSAP positions require passing a pre-placement drug test and participation in an ongoing random drug testing program.
