SUMMARY OF JOB DESCRIPTION

The Electric Asset Management and Planning Engineer will primarily be responsible for Distribution Electric Planning and Engineering. Other job duties include responsibility to analyze electric system needs, provide capital budget recommendations, work with system modeling software, and analyze system control/protection needs/performance and develop solutions.

DESCRIPTION OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • All NorthWestern Energy employees are required to adhere to company safety standards and the Code of Business Conduct & Ethics
  • Ensure all actions are consistent with NorthWestern Energy's values, mission, and strategic business objectives
  • Develop base cases to conduct electric system studies, using power system simulation software such as CYME
  • Model, analyze study results, propose solutions to problems and plan the South Dakota electric system
  • Prepare reports for system Capacity, Reliability, Asset life and Coordination studies
  • Use sound analytical skills and economic analysis to monitor, model, interpret study results, propose solutions to problems, and recommend viable long range asset plans for the electric system
  • Develop programs and monitor electric infrastructure Asset Management performance
  • Develop automation and protective device coordination schemes for the South Dakota electric system
  • Perform fault studies, conduct fault tests, and evaluate test reports to validate system operation and performance
  • Provide technical support for operations in areas of system loading, load transfers, system reliability, and capacity margins
  • Research new technology and products for improving safety, efficiency, and reliability of the electric system, providing detailed reports and recommendations for equipment
  • Design and evaluate projects to ensure compliance with NERC, FERC, NESC, and company standards
  • Travel to jobsites, off-site meetings, and trainings (up to 15% travel per year) including overnight stays when necessary
  • On call responsibilities may be required depending on applicant experience and training
  • Work all required hours including evenings, nights, and weekends
  • Perform individual lifts and carries office supplies up to 35 pounds

GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must have a B.S. degree in Engineering
  • Ability to obtain a Professional Engineer's License is preferred
  • Excellent computer skills and proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Working knowledge of load flow and protective relaying software (CYME) preferred
  • Demonstrate and maintain a good safety record
  • Valid driver's license and satisfactory driving record
