Group 71 - Mechanical EngineeringThe Mechanical Engineering Group focuses on developing innovative mechanical design solutions for ground, airborne, and spaceborne applications. Areas of mechanical design expertise include large structures, composite structures, highly efficient lightweight structures, mechanisms, optomechanical systems, electro-optic systems, electronics packaging, and cabling. Engineers from the group are critical to all aspects of program execution beginning with conceptual design, continuing through detail design, system integration and test, and concluding with environmental and performance testing. The group is the Engineering Division's center for 3D computer-aided design and configuration management. Example projects include airborne and space-based laser communications systems, biological agent detectors and identifiers, and large radar antenna systems.Job Description
The successful candidate will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team to lead the mechanical design, analysis and testing of complex mechanical, opto-mechanical and electro-mechanical systems. Responsibilities will include design, analyses, integration and testing of complex hardware from conceptual design through fabrication and field performance evaluation. The candidate must be knowledgeable in a broad range of challenging problems involving structures, mechanisms, thermal systems, optics and electronics. The successful candidate will be expected to present the design concepts to both internal and external audiences. This position involves working in close-knit teams with design, analyses and test personnel. The position may involve travel to meetings and field sites. Requirement:Demonstrated experience in mechanical design and analysis of a broad range of complex opto-mechanical, mechanism or electro-mechanical systems that must function in harsh environments, such as orbital or high altitude aircraft, is highly desired. Knowledge in precision mechanisms or deployable systems is highly desired. Must be able to work collaboratively in a team environment and demonstrate effective written and oral communication skills. Qualifications:PhD in Mechanical or Aerospace Engineering with expertise in mechanical design or MS with 10+ years of applicable experience.
