ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION

The Capital Area Food Bank is the largest organization in the Washington, DC metro area working to solve hunger and its companion problems: chronic under-nutrition, heart disease, and obesity. By partnering with 450 community organizations in DC, MD and VA as well as delivering food directly into hard to reach areas, the CAFB is helping 380,000 food insecure people each year get access to good, healthy food.

DESCRIPTION
The warehouse and food safety manager will oversee all functions of the warehouse including direct staff for the order pulling function, and Direct Distributions Coordinator, equipment, safety, facility sanitation, cleanliness and food safety for the distribution center by following company policies and procedures, AIB Standards, all Food Safety Standards, USDA Policies and local DOH Standards.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

Essential Functions:

  • Enforces and follows all Food Safety Standards, company security and safety policies and procedures.
  • Ensures staff adheres to policies and procedures for accurately filling and staging agency orders for DC and NOVA branch.
  • Establish cases per hour goal for order pullers to ensure we are operating in the most efficient manner.
  • Communicates daily with Customer Service on the status of orders for pick-up.
  • Supports Agency Mart staff and functions to ensure the floor is stocked with fresh produce and non-perishable items available for our agencies.
  • Responsible for maintaining an accurate Agency Mart inventory by reviewing reports each day and researching any discrepancies.
  • Ensures staff adheres to all AIB Standards and Food Safety policies and procedures.
  • Responsible for warehouse cleanliness and sanitation levels by maintaining records of facility inspections, cleaning records of staff, leading the food defense team meetings and inspections,
  • Ensures all safety standards are met regarding forklift equipment use and staff following CAFB safety policies and procedures, leads by example.
  • Requires the routine operation of warehouse equipment, participation in general distribution center maintenance by communicating any equipment problems to Senior Director or Facility Manager.
  • Provides prompt and accurate customer service to member agencies by filling orders from the warehouse when needed;
  • Interfaces with agency representatives, customer service or internal staff regarding order filling problems or questions;
  • Assists with the operation by helping load and unload trucks, tagging and marking product as it arrives, placing inventory in facility and rotating stock to ensure product quality.
  • Safely operates selected equipment such as a Forklift and Pallet Jack, which includes routine maintenance on specific equipment.
  • Maintains a professional demeanor, fosters an environment of teamwork, trust and respect.
  • Accurately reviews, and approves staff hours worked, completes reviews on time, issues disciplinary action as needed.
  • Provides timely and candid feedback of performance issues, handles employee concerns in a timely and professional manner;
  • Participates in hiring and termination process when applicable;
  • Contributes in management meetings, special events and training classes;
  • Performs other tasks as assigned

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervises employees and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning, assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Position Requirements:
  • College Degree preferred.
  • 3-5 years experience in warehouse / operation management.
  • Supervisory skills with a proven track record of developing staff and meeting operations goals.
  • Strong knowledge of receiving, warehouse, and operations processes and procedures.
  • 3-5 years experience with a Warehouse Management System that includes bar coding and scanning technology.
  • Computer skills including Outlook, Word and Warehouse Management Systems.
  • Ability to perform basic math computations and problem solving.
  • Obtain Food Defense Certificate with Servsafe and HACCP.
  • Strong management skills especially effective communication and teamwork skills.

Work Environment:
  • Physical activities involve sitting for 80% of the workday.
  • Occasionally lifts office supplies up to 20 pounds.
  • Ability to travel to sites, as needed, throughout the metropolitan area.
  • This position works in a warehouse setting, with some outdoor exposure during the workday.
  • Area contains moving forklifts and pallet jacks.
  • Frequent exposure to cooler and freezer temperatures.
